ABBOTSFORD, BC — June 29th, 2026 — Engaged community member and lifelong Abbotsford resident Benjamin Mehrer has officially announced his campaign for Abbotsford School Trustee, saying the future of the community depends on investing in today’s students. Mehrer believes schools should prepare young people not only to graduate, but to become confident, resilient, and engaged members of the
community.
“Our schools do far more than teach math or reading,” said Mehrer. “They help shape future leaders, entrepreneurs, tradespeople, healthcare professionals, artists, and neighbours. Every student deserves the opportunity to discover what success looks like for them.”
Born and raised in Abbotsford, Mehrer attended local public schools from kindergarten through graduation before earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of the Fraser Valley. As the first person in his family to graduate from university, he says he understands firsthand the transformative power of education and the lasting impact that teachers, mentors, and supportive communities can have on a young person’s future.
Today, Mehrer works as a Market People Manager for a local restaurant chain, where he helps develop more than 400 employees across Abbotsford and Aldergrove through leadership, training, and mentorship. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Archway Community Services and has dedicated much of his career to creating opportunities for young people through education, employment, and community involvement.
His campaign is guided by three beliefs:
- Every student deserves the opportunity to succeed.
- Every voice deserves to be heard.
- Every opportunity should be available to help students discover their own path.
Whether that path leads to university, the skilled trades, entrepreneurship, the arts, healthcare, technology, or another career, Mehrer believes schools should help each student build the confidence, knowledge, and skills to succeed.
“Success looks different for everyone, and each success is worth celebrating.”
Throughout the campaign, Mehrer will focus on five key priorities:
- Supporting student success and achievement
- Making responsible financial decisions that keep students first
- Strengthening student mental health and well-being
- Building stronger relationships within the community
- Preparing students for a lifetime of success
“My commitment is simple,” Mehrer said. “I will listen carefully, work collaboratively, and make decisions that reflect the best interests of students and our community. I believe each student deserves to feel they belong, every parent deserves to be heard, and every decision should help move our schools forward.”
“Over the coming months, I look forward to meeting community members, across Abbotsford, to hear their experiences, understand their priorities, and earn their trust. The best decisions are made when we listen first and work together.”
