I am 45 years old and I’ve lived in Abbotsford since I was 3 years old. I am a CPA and I’ve operated my own firm, Nyvall & Associates, since 2008. My wife, Mary Nyvall, is a physician in Abbotsford and has practiced maternity care since 2008. In 2021, she formed a new clinic called Fraser Birth Collaborative.

We live in East Abbotsford and have 5 children. Our oldest graduated last year from Yale and is now at UFV. We have 2 more children at Yale, 1 at Fraser, and 1 at MEI.

I spend significant amounts of time driving and watching my children’s sports. School sports have been amazing for our family. My oldest son, Isaac, got to play basketball for 4 years at Yale, and they won Eastern Valleys twice and went to Provincials 3 times. My oldest daughter, Clara, is a Yale volleyball player as well as a club volleyball player. My younger son, Charlie, got a really neat opportunity last year to play Grade 8 basketball at Abbotsford Traditional School, and they were the Provincial winners out of 350 teams — the first time an Abbotsford team has ever won Grade 8 boys Provincials. Charlie was the game MVP twice in the 4-game Provincials and is now a Yale Lion looking to build on that success in Grade 9.

Politically, I have a lot of experience. I have volunteered as the official agent/campaign treasurer many times for numerous popular Abbotsford long-term politicians at every level of office. I ran for office in Abbotsford in 2018 and put a lot of work into that campaign. I received what I now see was a predictable outcome in that campaign against a worthy opponent. I felt a calling to run for trustee in 2026, and I passionately look to capture that role and use that platform to advocate for victims of violence and bullying within the school system.

I am an avid traveller and look for opportunities, whether it’s a quick getaway (which my children called a “sneaky trip” when they were young) or seeing the sights in Europe. I’m a member at FitnessLab gym, and I begin my day by going to their 6am HIIT workout class.

My favourite shows on TV are Yellowstone, Lioness, and Reacher. I am a Seattle Seahawks fan and have been a ticketholder since 2001. If the Trustees have a Monday night meeting that conflicts with a Seahawks game and I call in sick, you should regard my absence with a certain degree of suspicion. I have the world’s coolest license plate, which is 12TH MN — that’s a Seahawks thing for “12th Man.”

My favourite concert I’ve ever been to is Metallica, and the only comedian I’ve ever watched is Nate Bargatze (tough to top his show). I am at a point in life where I value experiences over material possessions. I regret never seeing Elton John, and I regret not blowing off work and spending $600 to watch Canada beat Qatar at the World Cup in Vancouver.

If I hadn’t become an accountant, I would have liked to become a Police Officer. In Grade 11, I was accepted into the APD Junior Academy. I got terrific career advice from an officer who discouraged me from taking a criminology degree. He told me it would take a few years to get hired — probably until age 25. He said the APD doesn’t really care what your degree is, but requires that you have one, since they get tons of criminology applicants. He said if I was considering becoming a Chartered Accountant, I should do that, and if I wanted to pursue law enforcement at a time when I’m old enough for them to hire me, I’d be a really unique hire that would stand out with a different background. I articled at KPMG and by the time I wrote my national exams to qualify, I was 24 years old and looking to marry the beautiful doctor who had somehow seen some potential in me. At that time we started our careers and our family, and never looked back.

I am an accountant, but I would describe myself as an entrepreneur. I have often been described by clients as someone who sees things (trends, opportunities) that others don’t. I believe my technical qualifications and my business outlook will be an asset to the SD34 Board of Trustees.
