Mission, B.C. – The City of Mission is taking the next step toward a new automated curbside collection system and is encouraging curbside customers to select the cart sizes that best suit their household needs.

The new cart-based collection program will launch in the first week of May 2027, providing the community with a safer and more efficient collection service. As part of this transition, curbside customers can now select the sizes of their garbage, recycling, and organics carts through the city’s online cart selection platform.

The city is transitioning to a new automated collection system designed to:

• Improve safety for collection staff by reducing the need for heavy lifting
• Securely contain waste using lids equipped with gravity locks
• Help minimize access for pests (litter) and wildlife
• Establish a consistent collection system for curbside customers across the Mission
• Offer carts in various sizes to suit diverse household needs

Your Cart, Your Choice.

Residents can choose from various cart size options for trash, recycling, and organics collection.

The City encourages residents to learn about the available sizes and—wherever possible—visit a community pop-up event to view the carts in person before making a selection.

After using the carts for three months, households will have the opportunity to change their cart size once at no cost.

Dates

Cart selection begins: August 2026
Last date for cart selection: October 30, 2026
Cart delivery: March – April 2027
Automated collection begins: First week of May 2027
Free cart exchange period: August 3 to October 29, 2027

Customers who do not make a choice by the final deadline will be allocated a default cart size by the city.

Nothing is changing right now.

The current curbside collection service will continue as usual until May 2027. Customers should continue using their existing collection containers until the new carts arrive and the new program begins.
