Public Safety Through Partnership: A Message from Chief Watson

AbbyPD Chief Constable Colin Watson

As we reflect on the first nine months of 2026, I am proud of the dedication and professionalism demonstrated by the men and women of the Abbotsford Police Department. While policing continues to face complex and evolving challenges, the results we are seeing are a testament to the strong partnerships we have built with our residents, businesses, and community organizations.

Together, we are making meaningful progress. Violent crime has declined this year compared with last year; extortion-related activity continues to trend downward, and our officers remain focused on proactive enforcement, prevention, and early intervention initiatives that help keep our community safe. At the same time, we recognize there is still important work ahead, particularly in addressing impaired and aggressive driving, property crime, and other public safety concerns that impact residents’ quality of life.

Public safety is a shared responsibility. Through community engagement, innovation, and collaboration, we will continue working to ensure Abbotsford remains one of the safest communities in British Columbia.

2026 Public Safety Update:

During the first nine months of 2026, the Abbotsford Police Department responded to nearly 42,000 calls for service, reflecting the continued demand for police services across our growing community. Despite these demands, Abbotsford has seen encouraging trends in several key areas of public safety, with violent crime declining by 6.7% compared to the same period in 2025.

One of the most significant successes has been the continued reduction in extortion-related violence and associated criminal activity. Through targeted prevention strategies, enhanced support for victims and businesses, and ongoing enforcement efforts, extortion continues to trend downward across the city.
In 2025, AbbyPD recorded 59 extortion-related files. During the first nine months of 2026, that number fell to just 17 reported files. Equally encouraging, Abbotsford has not experienced an extortion-related shooting since December 2025. Recognizing that enforcement alone is not the solution, AbbyPD introduced Project Disengage, an initiative focused on early intervention, mentorship, and connecting individuals with support services designed to help them avoid or exit involvement in extortion-related violence and criminal recruitment networks.

In September, AbbyPD further expanded its prevention efforts with the release of a powerful awareness campaign highlighting the real and immediate consequences of becoming involved in extortion-related crime. The campaign aims to educate young people, families, and community members about the risks associated with criminal recruitment and violent criminal networks.

While violent crime is trending downward recently, property crime remains slightly elevated, increasing by 2.3% year-over-year. AbbyPD continues to remind residents that crime prevention begins with strong partnerships between police and the community. Through Project Clearview, residents and business owners can voluntarily register their security cameras, allowing investigators to quickly identify potential video evidence when crimes occur and increasing opportunities to identify suspects and solve offences more effectively.

Road safety remains another key concern. During the first nine months of 2026, AbbyPD officers removed 776 impaired drivers from Abbotsford roadways, helping prevent potentially tragic collisions. Excessive speeding also continues to pose a significant risk, with officers issuing 350 excessive speeding violations year-to-date. Enforcement efforts targeting dangerous driving behaviours will remain a priority as AbbyPD works to improve safety for everyone using our roads.

Looking ahead to 2027, AbbyPD will continue working collaboratively with residents, community organizations, and provincial and federal partners to address emerging and complex public safety issues. Community members can expect continued outreach initiatives, targeted prevention programs, and enhanced partnerships focused on supporting vulnerable individuals, preventing crime, and strengthening neighbourhood safety.

AbbyPD remains committed to building public trust, embracing modern policing practices, and delivering effective, community-focused policing services. Guided by our strategic priorities, AbbyPD will continue to focus on crime reduction, community engagement, organizational excellence, and supporting those most impacted by crime and victimization.

The Abbotsford Police Department is proud to work alongside Abbotsford’s diverse communities, including the South Asian community, to keep our neighbourhoods safe, welcoming, and connected.
Our message remains simple and important: If You “See Something, Say Something“.

We encourage residents to report suspicious activity, crimes in progress, and public safety concerns. By remaining vigilant and working together, community members play a critical role in preventing crime, supporting investigations, and helping police respond effectively.

Together, we can continue building a safer, stronger, and more resilient Abbotsford for generations to come.
