As Abbotsford continues to grow, a pressing question is emerging:
Are our sports and recreation facilities keeping pace with the community?
That question took centre stage on October 3, when Sport Abbotsford hosted an all-candidates debate at the Abbotsford Curling Club, bringing recreation and community infrastructure into focus ahead of the municipal election.
For local athletes, families and sports organizations, the concerns are familiar: limited field availability, aging facilities, growing waitlists and increasing demand for recreation spaces.
The debate explored important questions about Abbotsford’s future. Can existing facilities be better utilized? Should the city pursue larger, multi-purpose sports complexes? And how can new investments be balanced with other infrastructure needs and the financial realities facing taxpayers?
These discussions come as Abbotsford considers future recreation developments, including a proposed sports and recreation site on Lefeuvre Road.
But beyond facilities and funding, Sport Abbotsford emphasized the importance of community participation in shaping the city’s future:
“Democracy works best when people show up; not just on election day, but in the conversations that shape our community. We heard from the candidates. Now it’s our turn. Get informed, get engaged, and vote. Abbotsford’s future isn’t something that happens to us, it’s something we choose.”
As residents prepare to vote on October 17, the debate highlighted the long-term significance of recreation planning. Decisions made by the next Mayor and Council will influence the spaces available for children, families, athletes and future generations.
The Patrika thanks Sport Abbotsford for organizing the debate and providing an opportunity for residents to hear directly from candidates about the future of sport and recreation in Abbotsford.
