Movement Matters: Helping Kids Thrive This School Year

Back-to-school season often means getting children back into routines — earlier bedtimes, packed lunches, homework, reading and busy schedules. But there is another important part of a healthy school routine that can sometimes be overlooked: movement.

For children, being active isn’t only about exercise or playing sports. Movement plays an important role in their physical, mental and emotional development.

Running, jumping, climbing, dancing and playing can help children develop strength, coordination and balance. Regular movement can also support concentration, confidence, emotional regulation and social skills — all of which can help children both inside and outside the classroom.

Movement is a skill, and confidence can help make it lifelong.

Talhan Training & Fitness encourages families to think about physical activity as part of a child’s overall development rather than something that only happens during gym class or organized sports.

And getting children moving doesn’t have to mean signing them up for another program or adding something complicated to an already busy family schedule.

It can be as simple as:
  • Walking or biking together
  • Playing at the park after school
  • Kicking a soccer ball in the backyard
  • Dancing to a favourite song
  • Going for a family walk after dinner
  • Giving children time for unstructured outdoor play

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s consistency.

As children settle into the school year and spend more of their day sitting, reading and learning, creating opportunities to move can provide an important balance.

Perhaps the simplest message for parents this September is this: let kids run, jump, dance, explore and play.

Movement isn’t just exercise. It’s part of growing up.
