In a recent interview on Eye on the Valley with Surjit Atwal on 101.7 FM, family law lawyer Mandy Shergill shared a sobering reality: our court system is failing families. With over 12 years of experience, Shergill notes that overcrowding is at an all-time high, with even “urgent” matters frequently adjourned.

Delay for my clients looks like a parent waiting to see their kids without a regular schedule,” Shergill explains. These delays force people to take time off work for hearings that never happen, often leading them to accept unfair compromises just to end the “limbo.”

For children, the impact is even more severe. When trials drag on for years, the lack of stability becomes their “new normal,” making it nearly impossible for parents to co-parent effectively.

The burden isn’t just emotional; it’s financial. Shergill has seen clients take out second mortgages to fund ongoing litigation. “It’s really hard to heal when you’re stuck in a high-conflict situation for years,” she says.

Shergill, an accredited mediator, advocates for resolving matters outside of court. “Mediation is one of the best ways to get a speedy resolution. Families deserve answers, not years of waiting.”
